The use of methods to reduce energy consumption in greenhouses such as reduced heat losses, and improved efficiency of heating, cooling, and irrigation systems cancut energy consumption for the production of any crop to several times. The present research has designed and built an automated system for climate control of a rose greenhouse. This system is consisted of control and measurement stations. The control unit, itself, is consisted of a human-machine interface (HMI) device; while the measurement station is formed of one humidity, one light, and eight temperature sensors. Climate conditions of the greenhouse is received by the measurement station, there to be sent to the control one. Also, energy consumption in both systems are calculated and analyzed, too. The present research compares the impacts of the built automated system for climate control of greenhouse on the qualitative and quantitative traits of three cut-roses cultivars including 'Angelina', 'Samurai', and 'Red One' with the control system. Quality index and shoot weight of the cut-roses are improved under the automated system than the control. But there no difference could be found in traits of flowering stem length and number, stem diameter, number of lateral and blind shoots, internodes length, and vase-life, between the crops of two systems compared. The results also indicate a reduction in energy consumption under the automated climate management system than the control, equal to 12%. In sum, considering that the use of climate control system has improved the efficiency of energy consumption without having a negative impact on the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the crop, it is recommended.

A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of salinity stress on growth and macroelements contents of two olive varieties in soilless culture medium. In the research, one-year old saplings of two olive varieties, ‘Zard’ and ‘Mission’, were subjected to different salinity levels induced by NaCl including 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 dS/m-1 for 5 months. Based on the results, total dry weights of the varieties were decreased at 16 dSm-1 compared to control up to 63 and 85% at ‘Mission’ and ‘Zard’, respectively. Also, a 25% reduction in total dry weight was observed under salinities of 7 and 3.6 dSm-1 for ‘Mission’ and ‘Zard’, respectively. Salinity was decreased the concentrations of macronutrients and increased the concentrations of Na and Cl in roots and leveas of the both varieties. Compared to control, Na and Cl concentrations in leaves and roots was increased under salinity of 16 dS/m-1 at 1660 and 679% for Na and 1069 and 506% for Cl. In all salinity levels, Na and Cl concentrations in the leaves and roots of 'Zard' variety were more than that of 'Mission'. Thesa data demonstrated that ‘Mission’ has a more salinity tolerance than ‘Zard’, and could be used as a salt-tolerant variety for cultivation under salinity conditions. The defence mechanisms of ‘Mission’ are restricting in absorbtion and translocation of Na to aerial parts and accumulate a proper concentration of K in Leaves.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of scion properties (number of buds on scion, presence of terminal bud on scion, and scion diameter and length) on success of epicotyl grafting and early growth of grafted walnut ‘Chandler’ at the college of Aburaihan of University of Tehran, during 2013-14. Grafting success, survival of the grafted trees, callus quality, shoot length and leaf number per tree were measured 150 days after grafting. No significant differences were found between scions containing terminal bud or lateral buds. The highest callus quality, grafting success (83.4 percent) and survival rate (72.8 percent) were obtained by using double bud scions. Using scions with 3-6 mm diameter significantly increased grafting success (73.4 percent) and survival rate (61.1 percent) of the grafted trees. The highest survival rate (56.1 percent) was found in trees grafted with 7-12 cm scions. The highest leaf numbers were found in the trees grafted with double bud scions, and 7-12 cm scions (9.1 and 8.6 leaves, respectively). The longest shoots were observed in trees grafted with scions containing two bud, and 3-6 mm diameter and 7-12 cm length (9.1, 12.7 and 12.2 cm, respectively). In conclusion, using scions containing two buds, with 3-6 mm diameter and 7-12 cm length were suggested to improve success of epicotyl grafting and quality of the grafted walnut ‘Chandler’ trees.

In the experiment, effects of five levels of irrigation water salinity including 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 dS.m-1 were evaluated on ʻZardʼ and ʻMissionʼ olive cultivars under soilless culture. Data showed that salinity had significant effects on all growth parameters in both olive cultivars. Leaf dry weight, shoot and root dry weight, leaf chlorophyll index, shoot and root tolerance index, shoot and internodes length, leaf area, leaf number and leaf relative water content were affected by salinity and significantly decreased. These reductions were more in ʻZardʼ comparing to ʻMissionʼ. Shoot dry weight, leaf dry weight and root dry weight were decreased 80, 80 and 69 percent, respectively at 16 dS.m-1 salinity treatments with compare to control. Leaf sodium (Na+) concentration and rate of sodium to potassium (K+) in leaf were increased and leaf potassium concentration was decreased by salinity. Increase of Na+ and decrease of K+ were more in ʻZardʼ comparing to ʻMissionʼ. Also, leaf and shoot dry weight were affected by concentration of Na+, K+ and Na+: K+ in leaf and there were a significant correlation among these parameters with leaf and shoot dry weight. Results indicated that ʻMissionʼ variety were more salt tolerance than ʻZardʼ.

Light as an important environmental factor, influences many aspects of plant growth and development. Leaves are different in some characters including stomatal behavior under shade or light conditions. In this study, the effects of different levels of light intensity on stomatal behavior of two rose cultivars, ‘Gulmira’ and ‘Red One’, were evaluated under controlled conditions. To obtain different light intensities, green polyethylene nets were used. Treatments were light intensities of 1200 (Control), 640, 520 and 240 mmol/m2/s. Based on the results, the highest stomatal length and width were found in 640 mmol/m2/s in both cultivars. Regarding stomatal density, there were no significant differences among different levels of light intensities, although cultivar effect was significant. Therefore, stomatal density was higher in ‘Gulmira’ than ‘Red One’. Also, stomatal conductance was significant only between cultivars, and there was no significant difference among light treatments. However there was an increasing trend of stomatal conductance with increasing light intensities.

Nowadays, establishment and maintenance of turfgrasses due to high water requirements was faced with serious doubts. Hence, screening of drought resistance native grasses, and introduces them as turfgrass is not only effective in reduction of water usage but can also preserve plant gene pools of the country. In the present experiment, Wheat grass and Bromus as two native grasses were compared with perennial ryegrass as control. After establishment and coverage of the pots surfaces by turfgrass in outdoor, three mowing heights including 2, 4 and 6 cm were applied on the species weekly. During the experiment, shoot growth, tillering, leaf color and leaf width, fresh and dry weight were measured weekly. The results of this research showed that Bromus due to undesirable tissue (leaf width more than 3 mm) and low density is not suitable for use in landscape. Wheat grass despite of rougher texture and less color than perennial ryegrass, has higher tillering, suitable color (7.59) and good texture (leaf width about 2 mm). Also, mowing height of 2 cm was determined as the best for three species studied.

Biosynthesis of plant pigments is affected by environmental factors especially light intensity. An expriment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different light intensities on photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic pigments of two rose cultivars including ‘Red One’ and ‘Gulmira’ under greenhouse conditions. In this experiment, the effects of different light intensities including 240, 520 and 640 mol/m2/s and control with 1200 mol/m2/s (without application of plastic nets) on the rose cultivars was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Plastic nets were used to obtain different levels of light intensities. The results showed that photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll and carotenoids, significantly increased in the light intensity of 240 mol/m2/s vs. control. In this light intensity, antocyanin content was significantly reduced. Reducing light intensity to 240 mol/m2/s could result in higher chlorophyll as well as carotenoid content without significant changes in flavonoids. Increasing anthocyanin content with increasing light intensity to 1200 mol/m2/s could be a defense mechanism in plants against toxic levels of light intensities.

This study was carried out to investigate flower yield and yield components in Iranian Rosa damascena using 20 genotypes, collected from different regions of Iran and grown in Drylands and Deserts Research Station of Kashan, Iran, using a randomized complete block design with three replications in 2007-2008. Flower yield per plant, number of flowers per plant, plant height, leaf length, width, length and width of bud, length and width of pedicle, fresh weight of flower, number of petal per flower, length and width of receptacle, plant growth date, budding date, time of flowering and flowering period were recorded. A significant phenotypic correlation indicated a strong positive relationship between flower yield and number of flowers per plant. Result of stepwise regression analysis showed that 94 percent of total variation of flowers yield per plant could be explained by number of flowers per plant and weight of the fresh flower. The path analysis indicated that the number of flower per plant had the most direct effect on the yield. This suggested that number of flowers per plant and weight of the fresh flowers are the most important components determining flower yield per plant in Damask rose.
