In order to study the effect of N rate and plant density on grain yield and N use efficiency of blessed thistle, a field study was carried out in a randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement of treatments in three replications at Research Field of Tarbiat Modares University in 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Treatments comprised of four pure N rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1) from urea source and five plant densities (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 plants m-2). The main effects of nitrogen and plant density were significant for grain yield, NUE, plant height, SPAD value, root to shoot weight ratio and N content of grain. Increasing N rates increased grain yield, SPAD value, plant height and grain N, but agronomic efficiency, N recovery and utilization were decreased by increasing of N rate; Higher densities resulted in decreased grain yield and chlorophyll index, while improved NUE throughout increment of root to shoot weight ratio and plant height. Novel findings of this study could be used for N management.

Purple conefloweras top-selling medicinal plant is widely used in Europe and North America for the treatment of common cold. This experiment was conducted as a randomized complete block design in split plot arrangement with three replications in Research Farm of Genetics and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute of Tabarestan in 2012-13. Experimental treatments included three transplanting dates (April 9, May 9 and June 8, 2013), and three plant population densities (7, 10 and 16 plant/m2) which considered as main and subplots, respectively. Results showed a relative compensatory effect of higher population density until 10 plants/m2, however, delayed planting resulted to decrease in total shoot, leaf (L) and stem (S) dry weights. It represents that the highest flower (F) dry weight (27.1 g/plant) was related to planting on May 9 with 10 plant/m2 density. Ratio of L/shoot was greater than S/Shoot than F/shoot dry weight. The highest (L+F)/Shoot ratio was related to the April and May planting dates while the highest S/Shoot ratio was related June’s planting date. Maximum total phenol content of leaves (51.1 mg of GAE/ g dry matter) and stems (35.9 mg of GAE/ g dry matter) were measured in plants cultivated on April 9 with a density of 10 plant/m2. The highest total phenolic content of flowers (56.5 mg of GAE/ g dry matter) was determined in plants cultivated on May 9 with a density of 10 plant/m2. Total phenol of flowers was greater in leaves than stems. Overall, it could be concluded that early planting of purple coneflower on April 9 with 10 plant/m2 density was suitable for leaf and stem dry weight and total phenol production, while the delayed planting until May 9 with a population density of 10 plant/m2 was favorite for flower as production of dry weight and total phenol, according to the experiment conditions

Satureja sahendica Bornm. is an endemic medicinal plant which grows wild in natural habitats of west and north-west regions of Iran. In this study, for domestication of Satureja sahendica and study it's essential oil content and composition, the seeds of seven populations were collected from natural habitats and cultivated in three replications as a complete randomized blocks design. The aerial parts of each accession were collected in full flowering stage at three consecutive years. The essential oils were obtained by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The results showed the highest oil yields were obtained at the first year after cultivation. The major compounds in all oils were Thymol, P-cymene and -terpinene with different percentages. The highest amount of thymol was found in the oils of the plants at second year. In the other words, the oils had better quality, in the second year. The percentage of -terpinene were reduced in the oils in the second year and then increased in the third year. Amount of p-cymene did not show similar changes during three studied years. Generaly, it can be said annual plants had higher oil yields and two-year old plants had better oil quality.

In this investigation some chemical and morphological properties of dog rose fruit in 10 regions of north Iran were measured. Results showed significant difference between traits in studied regions. Beta-carotene ranged between 0.05 – 0.323 (mg/g FW). Total soluble carbohydrate varied from 5.9 – 23.3%. The highest content of total anthocyanin 23.7 and the lowest was 7.71(mg/L cyanidin-3-glucoside). The highest and lowest amount of TSS in regions under study was 15.72 and 34.9%, respectively. GGE biplot method used for studying effect of different regions on chemical and morphological properties. IR56 accession had highest amount of beta-carotene according to the polygon. The highest content of and total anthocyanin obtained from IR51. Pearson’s coefficients showed that fruit weight had significantly correlation with fruit flesh. Fruit length had significantly correlation with fruit width. Also Total soluble carbohydrate correlation with total anthocyanin and TSS was significant. Obtained results from this study could be used in the future breeding program of dog rose.
